Miyakejima, a beautiful island in the Izu Islands chain, is located just a 50-minute flight from Chofu in Tokyo. On this trip, we asked Chef Minako Tanaka to sample the foods nurtured by the island's abundant energy.

Gourmet takeouts on a nature-filled island

With its abundant and expansive nature, Miyakejima is one of the best islands in the Izu Islands chain for eating outside. Enjoy delicious foods with locally sourced ingredients as you take in the dynamic scenery created by the activity of the Earth.

Bento (Boxed Lunches)

From groceries and daily goods and boxed lunches, Tsuchiya Foods always has a wide variety. Their most popular lunch is noriben, with nori seaweed generously laid over rice. 510 yen. Take in the salty ocean smell when you open the box!

Sandwich

The island's most fashionable café and restaurant opened in July 2019. There you can buy sandwiches made with bread from the island's only bakery, Tsukuana-Seika, and packed with vegetables such as island-grown carrots, cucumbers, and tomatoes. 1,000 yen

Mango sandwiches freshly made with mangoes grown on the island (700 yen) and omurice (1,000 yen) are also available for takeout.

Pick up delicious island souvenirs

Miyakejima has a variety of delicious souvenirs. We've carefully selected the ones you shouldn't miss.

The passion fruit grown in Miyakejima's warm climate has the ultimate balance between sweetness and sourness. They are 167 yen each at Iki-iki Osakana Center (Harvest and selling times are limited)
Shima Pepper Soy Sauce is made using shima peppers grown on Miyakejima. The spiciness of the chilis goes well with the rich flavor of the naturally brewed soy sauce. A bottle is 482 yen at Iki-iki Osakana Center
Oyamaichi shochu is entirely handmade, from the koji starter to the labels. Price determined by store/Miyakejima Brewery
Miyakejima's Ashitaba Curry uses lots of the special parsley grown on the island. It's 500 yen at Iki-iki Osakana Center (Prices may vary by store)
