Oshima

Oshima, or Izu Oshima. The largest of the Izu Islands. The closest outlying island from Tokyo. Known for the 1986 eruption of Mount Mihara as well as Habu Port, featured in "The Dancing Girl of Izu (Izu no odoriko)" by Yasunari Kawabata. An island for swimming in the summer and flowering Camellia japonica in the winter.

Day 1

Arrived at Oshima, the closest island to Tokyo's city center.

Arrived at Oshima, the closest island to Tokyo's city center.

It's just 1 hour and 45 minutes away from Tokyo, Oshima is the largest island in the Izu Islands and it's the closest island to Tokyo's city center.
That's why it's a favorite destination for those who want to escape the hustle and bustle of the city and spend a day relaxing in quiet nature.
Handmade ice cream

Handmade ice cream

After checking into our hotel, we headed straight to a handmade ice cream shop near Motomachi Harbor.
This shop is quite famous in Oshima. The shop owner uses only natural ingredients to make ice cream by hand for his many customers.
Milk Ice Cream

Milk Ice Cream

We went there late in the day, and all the ice cream we wanted was gone....
At least we were able to taste milk ice cream made with fresh Oshima milk.
Here, I chatted for about an hour with a person who traveled alone from Tokyo and liked the island.
Talking with strangers is sometimes the best part of traveling.
Bountiful Seafood dinner at Hotel Shirai

Bountiful Seafood dinner at Hotel Shirai

One of the joys of island traveling is probably the seafood-filled ryokan meals that you can enjoy at a reasonable price.
In Oshima we stayed at the Hotel Shiraiwa, where we were served a variety of seafood, as well as a specialty of the area, camellia oil.
As a fan of deep-fried crabs, this was one of the best dinners I'd ever had.
Onsen (hot springs)

Ending the day with a soak in an onsen
Once in the evening and once in the morning, the onsen seems to be the crown jewel of traveling in Japan.

Day 2

By bus

By bus

This is the day to start traveling around Oshima. Oshima is best traveled by rental car, but buses are also available.
Be sure to check the bus schedule at your hotel, as the buses have set times that can change depending on the place of departure that day.
A one-day bus ticket is all you need for the Oshima trip

A one-day bus ticket is all you need for the Oshima trip

Since it's an island, bus fares are quite expensive.
So if you plan to use the bus more than three times, it's highly recommended to purchase a one-day bus ticket.
You can purchase the bus ticket directly from the bus driver.
Enigmatic Volcanic Mount Mihara Hiking

Enigmatic Volcanic Mount Mihara Hiking

Located in the center of Oshima Island, Mount Mihara is a volcanic mountain famous for its trekking course that surrounds the crater at the summit.
When I went up in the morning, it was cloudy, so I could only go halfway. Being located at a high altitude, it's extremely sensitive to changes in weather,
with conditions quickly alternating between good and bad.
Unfortunately, due to heavy fog, I couldn't make it all the way to the top.
Lunch at the restaurant located at the entrance of Mount Mihara

After the hike, I had lunch at a restaurant located at the entrance of Mount Mihara
where I tried one of Oshima's specialties, a Tempura bowl made with Angelica keiskei of Ashitaba."
Mount Fuji

Mount Fuji

On the opposite side of Oshima is the Izu Peninsula, so I wasn't sure if I would be able to see Mount Fuji, but surprisingly, Mount Fuji is very clearly visible.
Oshima Park Embracing Nature

Oshima Park Embracing Nature

The place I visited by bus is Oshima Park. Oshima Park is divided into three main sections: a botanical garden, a zoo, and a camellia museum.
A botanical garden where you can encounter various camellias in their natural state on a vast expanse of land.
Zoo

Zoo

I was able to enjoy both the zoo, funded by the profits of Japan's lottery business, and the camellia museum, where various camellia flowers are showcased,
all in one non-stop visit.

Like Doshima, Oshima is also famous for camellias, and you can find camellia creams, camellia oil, camellia shampoos, etc. being sold everywhere.
Camellia oil is already famous in Japan, but I just learned for the first time that it's made here.

And chili, salt, milk, etc. are specialties, so various related products are made, which was fun to explore.
Taking a plane from Oshima Airport to Tokyo

Taking a plane from Oshima Airport to Tokyo

There are flights available from Tokyo to Oshima in addition to the jetfoil.
I was very curious about what the small village's airport would look like and what the airplane from there would be like

Taking the jetfoil would take 1 hour and 45 minutes, but by plane, it's just a quick 20-minute trip to Tokyo!
The smallest airplane I've ever got on, this trip was the most unique experience.
