Miyakejima, a beautiful island in the Izu Islands chain, is located just a 50-minute flight from Chofu in Tokyo. On this trip, we asked Chef Minako Tanaka to sample the foods nurtured by the island's abundant energy.

We love fishing!
Enjoy shore fishing on Miyakejima, a fishing paradise!

Along with her guide, Mr. Sako, Tanaka visited a spot called Hodai near Kamanoshiri Beach. She learned how to bait the hook and use the rod, then headed out to the ocean to cast her line. "You can catch isaki (threeline grunt), isuzumi (brassy chub), and nizadai (scalpel sawtail) here," said Mr. sako as they waited for a nibble. Her bait was taken away a few times, but her patience was rewarded when she caught a colorful akahata (banded reef-cod) and a long-mouthed datsu (needlefish)!

You can also eat the fish you've caught for dinner at Hotel Kairaku.
In addition to fishing, you should definitely take a leisurely stroll along the coast. You'll feel refreshed as you take in the vast ocean around you, a view only possible from an island like Miyakejima.
Even if you don't catch anything, you can buy fresh fish at Iki-iki Osakana Center, the island's souvenir store.
Island fruits and vegetables are also available for purchase.
