Geological Strata
This geological cross section is now one of the highlights of Oshima. The guide will recommend the best angles for taking great photos. The layers, which give the impression of a
ring-shaped layer cake, have formed through 20,000 years of Oshima’s volcanic history. Look up at the formation as your guide tells you how Oshima was formed.
The colors of
the strata are different depending on the time of day and weather. Let your guide show you where to stand for your own one-of-a-kind photo opportunity.
If the weather
cooperates, you’ll get a great view of the Izu Islands across the ocean.

Mt. Mihara Summit
The highlight of any sightseeing trip to Oshima! The path from the top of Mt. Mihara is paved, so even those who are unsteady walking on mountains can feel the wonders of the
volcano. You won’t go all the way to the summit of Mt. Mihara on this trip, but you will walk as the guide explains the lava flow and plants in the area.
You can also enjoy
learning about the smooth pāhoehoe lava, the bumpy ′a′a lava, and other volcano-related terms that originate from the Hawaiian language. Your imagination will grow as the guide
explains where the lava came from after the eruption, how it flowed, and how it hardened. The story of the sturdy plants that have grown from the lava is also fascinating. Be
sure to take a chance next time to climb to the summit and the crater! Your guide was born and raised in Oshima and can tell you all about the previous eruptions.
30 min
<Taxi or Bus>A direct bus line also goes from the Mt. Mihara summit to the day’s departure port.
If you use taxis or rental cars wisely, you can make it a day trip from Atami,
Shizuoka Prefecture, or Central Tokyo. Or if you’ll be spending a night on Oshima before or after your tour, we recommend visiting the Izu Oshima Volcano Museum in Motomachi.

Geological Strata
The strata, which change color depending on time and weather, cannot be seen from up close for safety reasons.
You can see its real color by touching the same volcanic ash
from the strata prepared by a guide.
This sign, which is shaped like a ring-shaped layer cake, is at the closest bus stop to the strata. It’s easy to miss, but its playfulness makes the trip more fun.

Habu Observation Deck
Habu Port, a round inlet visible from this observation deck, was the caldera of an old volcano.
It was once so popular for its wonderful breezes that you couldn’t walk
around the port without bumping into someone.

If you take a taxi, you will stop near the former Jinnomaru Dwelling. It takes about 15 minutes on foot.
Habu Port
Enjoy a guided tour of historical sites across the old caldera, including Jinnomaru Dwelling, the former residence of a fishermen’s boss, and the former inn Minatoya Ryokan,
which is featured in a renowned Japanese novelist Yasunari Kawabata’s work, “Izu no Odoriko (The Dancing Girl of Izu.”)
The guide will explain the history of the port town
road that gives a sense of just how round the caldera is, and the buildings with their old lattice work still intact.
As you walk along Habu Port you can try local favorites such as taiyaki fish-shaped pancakes sold from a refurbished old folk house, and deep-fried croquettes that are very popular among the locals. Having a guide familiar with the shopkeepers will make chatting with them even more enjoyable.

For a smooth experience, we recommend that you
travel with somebody who is able to communicate in Japanese.
Tips
Oshima has limited options for food, so we recommend the boat-shaped lunch box Shima-shima-bento with the island’s famous bekko-zushi, sushi of raw fish marinated in soy sauce and the island’s chilies. You can buy one from the shop at the port terminal, or you can order one in advance.
For getting around the island, we recommend either joining a guided tour or using a taxi or rental car. Local bus lines are available, but their schedules and departure/arrival locations may change depending on which port is used that day. One-day or two-day bus passes are a good way to get around.
